Two men — Sunday Williams and John Jeremiah — who allegedly stole jewellery valued at N9.5m, on Tuesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Williams, 23, and Jeremiah, 28, are being tried on a four counts bordering on conspiracy, intent to commit felony and stealing.
Sgt. Samson Oyelowo of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Lagos, who stood in for the prosecutor, told the court that the offences were committed on December 20, 2014 at 10, Kufesi St., Yaba, Lagos.
Oyelowo said the accused broke into the house of one Dokun Omisore and carted away jewellery valued at N9.5m.
“The accused carted away gold chains, bangles, rings and a gold watch belonging to the complainant’s spouse,” he said.
The offences, he argued, contravened Sections 285 (1), (7), 305 (a), (b), 306 (I), (2) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Both accused persons, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olatunbosun Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2m each with two sureties each in like sum.
“One of the sureties must be a blood relation and an elder statesman, holding a high position in the community and must show a bank statement,’’ he said.
The case was adjourned to March 12 for mention.
