#Nigeria - Nigeria Hits A Record Power Transmission

On Tuesday the Management of Transmission Company of Nigeria
(TCN) announced that Nigeria had achieved a new electricity
transmission peak of 4545MW through its national network.

The Nation notes that according to the statement by Seun Olagunju,
the General Manager on public affairs, the feat was achieved at
21.45hrs on Monday.

The previous power transmission peak of 4517MW was attained on
December 23, 2012.

Previously TCN informed that electricity wheeling to the Distribution
companies has improved to over 4000MW due to improvement in fuel
supply to the power generation plants.

The organization says that it will continue to work towards
enhancing its power wheeling capability and reliability of the network
to be able to deliver more quality electricity from the Generation
plants to the Distribution companies nationwide.

TCN Managment states: “Expanding this support both bilaterally with
the individual countries and to the Multinational Joint Task Force,
which the Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin are in the process of
standing up to coordinate their counter Boko Haram campaign.” Reuters estimated that Nigeria, with a population of around 170 million, has installed power capacity that fluctuates between around 6,000 to just over 7,000 MW, but experiences severe electricity
shortages that are crippling its growth.

#Update - Abacha’s Personal Doctor Sheds Light On How He Died

Sani Abacha’s sudden death caused lots of rumours
An event in 1998 that changed the Nigerian history. By June 1998,
Sani Abacha had ruled Nigeria for almost five years. Isolated by the
West, Abacha promised elections and a transition to civilian rule by
October 1998, but with just months to polls, all the political parties
nominated General Abacha as their candidate for president.

Professor Wali describes Abacha as “ a quiet person, calm person. He
could be really firm on some issues, but normally he didn’t talk
much ”.

He served as physician to the three previous Nigerian heads of state
after being reluctantly recruited in that role in the early 1980-s. He
considered himself politically neutral and lived outside the sprawling
heavily guarded presidential complex known as Aso Rock in the capital
Abuja. But he was always in the presidential entourage.

Professor Wali says Abacha’s health was not so serious  before his
death. “Abacha was generally healthy though he had some health
issues, he was treated, he’s responded [to that treatment] very
well. He didn’t have any heart-related diseases at that time. ”

On the 7 of June, 1998 Wali’d been with Abacha, as he hosted the
Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat and all seemed well. The next
morning General Sani Abacha was due to fly to the OAU summit being
held in Burkina-Faso and professor Wali was due to go with him.

Professor Wali recounts that “around 6 am I had a phone call from his
security officers, and they said, “please come, come to the villa,
come urgently!” Before I even could get ready, they came and picked
me. I had no idea what it all was about. ”
The car carrying the doctor sped towards the presidential villa
through a special entrance – a shortcut which only the president was
allowed to use.

The doctor realised something was seriously wrong.
“I arrived then I saw chief security there and he said “doctor come
in, please, come in!” We all rushed and I just saw the president.
There was another doctor who came earlier, resuscitating him.

Abacha was in the sitting room. He was on the couch. He was in his
normal work clothes. I didn’t panic. I’ve seen a lot of serious
problems before in my practice, but to affect him was very tough,
definitely. I joined and we did as much as we could to resuscitate
him. But I realised that he was dead because he was fuming. We just
continued resuscitation and even injected some things, but it didn’t
work. ”

After 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the stricken general,
Professor Wali said General Abacha had died. “I said, sorry – there’s
nothing we can do ”.

There was no immediate public announcement, in a country prone to
coups, Abacha’s head of security first increased the guard around
the presidential complex and then called the heads of the armed
forces to gather to decide on his replacement.

“Immediately the security officer took over, and he invited all the
service chiefs to come to Abuja, by then most of them were based in
Lagos. ” says doctor Wali.
When the service chiefs arrived, some of them asked to see the body
to pay their respect to their former leader.

“They wanted to make sure, that he is dead. And some of them were
crying” – tells Wali.
Professor informed the family of what have happened. Obviously, the
sudden death of an apparently healthy head of state raised a few
questions.

Professor Wali was determined that there should be an autopsy to
find out what caused the sudden heart attack. After much
deliberating, the family declined, preferring the quick burial in line
with Islamic tradition. But the doctor was determined to find some
clues as to what have happened.

“I still try to take some samples of blood and urine and hair and
things like that, just thinking for the future chemical tests, ”
Professor Wali said, adding that “it’s very difficult to say [whether
he died of natural causes]. What I can see. The blood test we did, has
shown some raised cardiac enzymes [proteins that are released into
the blood by dying heart muscles].That’s why we thought maybe it
was cardiac attack.”

Every Nigerian has his own theory about what happened to General
Abacha. There are rumours that he was poisoned, or that he spent a
night entertaining young ladies.

Speaking on the rumours, Professor
Wali said: “when I entered [Abacha’s premises], there were no ladies.
It might be true but I did not see them. Concerning the poison, as I
said no post-mortem has been done, so I couldn’t assure whether he
was poisoned or it was a heart attack. ”

While the generals deliberated on who would take over, plans were
made to take Abacha’s body to his hometown in Kano later that day.

It was decided to finally tell the public what had happened. But the
mystery around Abacha’s death still remains seventeen years after
his sudden and unexpected demise.

Earlier Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, Chief Security Officer (CSO) of
General Sani Abacha, who was Nigeria’s military Head of State from
November 1993 to June 1998, told the press his own version of Sani
Abacha’s last days.

#New - Explosion Rocks Rivers Court After Judge Ruling

An explosion has just occurred outside the Federal High Court I, Port
Harcourt, where Justice Lambo Akanbi reportedly delivered a crucial
ruling this morning, July 9.

The Justice in his ruling said the decision of the Amaechi-led
administration to go ahead with the conduct of local government
election on May 23, was a flagrant abuse of court process and a total
disregard for the rule of law.

Akonbi explained that council election defiled the rule of law because
it was conducted despite court order asking all parties to maintain
status quo.

Speculations have it that the explosion outside the court premises
might have been a reaction to the ruling.
Details of the incident are still sketchy as at the time of filing this
report.

Meanwhile, Vanguard has reported that there was no casualty
recorded in the blast. A source also confirmed that there is heavy
presence of security operatives at station road where the High court
is located.

#News - Funds recovered for French love scam victim

Lagos - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has helped a French victim recover ?10 000 locals defrauded him in a online love scam.

The funds have been wired to the victim, one F. Mercade, through his account in France on the recommendation of the French Embassy in Nigeria.

Two internet fraudsters, Omodara Adedapo Oluseye and Adesuyi Ayodeji Adedapo, defrauded him after they deceived him into a phantom relationship that was supposedly alter-bound.

The scam was reported to the Commission via a petition from the French Consulate in Lagos, on behalf of Mercade.

The petitioner alleged that he met a Nigerian woman by name, 'Kate Williams' on the internet sometime in 2009 and they developed a relationship which was to culminate in marriage.

'Williams' was to relocate to join Mercade in France, to consummate the relationship.

While Mercade planned the logistics of the relocation, 'Williams' who purportedly did some jobs for an unnamed company in Nigeria, came up with a story that the company refused to pay 'her' for job done. 'She' sought the assistance of Mercade and the 'couple' contacted a lawyer named 'James Robert', to procure traveling documents and also help her claim money from the company owing her.

Investigations into the matter by the Commission revealed that 'Kate Williams' is the pseudonym of Omodara Adedapo Oluseye, a male student of the College of Agriculture, Akure, who, however, resides in Ibadan Oyo state.

Omodara's accomplice, Adedapo, assisted in collecting the money transferred by the victim from the Akure, Ondo State branch of a new generation bank, using forged drivers' license.

The duo were prosecuted on a two count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences before a Federal High Court Lagos, convicted and sentenced in June 2011 to one year imprisonment each without an option of fine.

#News - Police raid baby factory, rescue nine pregnant girls

Nine pregnant girls and women were on Saturday discovered in a baby
factory at the 9th Mile area of Enugu State during a raid by the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr.
Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed that the baby factory was owned and
operated by one Ikechukwu Onoh, of Etiti, Amakwo-Ngwo village, in
Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Onoh and the ladies were taken into police custody after the raid.
According to Amaraizu, the factory was run in the Onoh’s private
residence.
Our correspondent learnt that operatives of the 9th Mile Division of
the command raided the baby factory after monitoring activities in the
building over a period of time.
Nine pregnant girls and women seen in the factory were at various
stages of pregnancy.
The ladies were identified as Stella James, 19, from Ohaozara, Ebonyi
State; Eze Jennifer, 19, of Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Area of
Enugu State; Ugwu Christabel, 17, a native of Aku, in Igbo-Etiti Local
Government Area of Enugu State; Happiness Mbaonu, 17, from Nnewi,
Anambra State, and Ovunna Ifeoma, 20, from Ezza, in Ebonyi State.
Others are Esther Nwankwo, 21, a native of Nkalagu, in Ebonyi State;
Onyedika Agu, 23, of Isuawa, Awgu in Enugu State; Blessing James,
23, from Ohafia, Abia State, and Chibueze Ujunwa, 24, from Aninri
Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The ladies are currently helping the police in ongoing investigations.
However, the owner of the ‘factory,’ Onoh, claimed that he got a
provisional approval in October 2007 from the ministry of women
affairs and social development in Enugu State to admit and shelter
pregnant women in his hospital, known as ‘Tex Hospital and Maternity
Home,’ which was located at 9th Mile.
Onoh said he decided to keep the pregnant ladies in his private residence
when the said hospital closed down.
He admitted that, although he was supposed to formally inform the
ministry of women affairs and social development within 24 hours of
admitting any pregnant woman, he only notified the authorities
through phone calls, and not in writing.
Also, he was not able to produce any reference letter through which
any of the ladies was referred to his home.
But some of the girls, who opened up to the police, said Onoh takes
care of them, but on the basis of an agreement that he will take the
babies upon delivery.
Ugwu Christabel, who claimed she got pregnant after she was raped,
said her aunt directed her to Onoh’s residence.
She said her parents wanted to marry her off to an old man because of
the ‘unwanted’ pregnancy.
Christabel further explained that the ladies usually gave Onoh a list of
items they needed, which he would purchase for them.
Another girl, Happiness Mbaonu, said she was impregnated by an
unknown man, who took her home when she was stranded at Holy Ghost
Park in Enugu.
She also said ‘somebody’ referred her to Onoh’s house.
The police spokesman, Amaraizu, said the State Criminal and
Intelligence Department of the command is conducting full scale
investigations into the matter.

Aliko Dangote Promises 24hr Electricity Project In Lagos State

Aliko Dangote earlier this week revealed that his company is in the
process of building a Gas Pipeline from Bonny to under the sea which
when done, will provide Lagos with 24hr power supply. Dangote said this
when he paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos state,
Akinwunmi Ambode .
Speaking to the press after the visit, the Africa’s richest man said:
“I’ve assured him that we really love doing business here, it’s a
friendly state for doing business and also to assure him of all the
projects that we are doing that we are on course; that is building the
largest ever single refinery of 650,000 barrels per day, which is by far
more than the consumption of Nigeria and that would satisfy our
consumption at least for the next 7 to 10 years by the time we finish.
Also, we are building the largest fertilizer plant of two to three million
tonnes of Uranium and Amonia also in the Lekki Free Trade Zone and
assure him that we are going to do a Gas Pipeline from Bonny to under
the sea, in which when we finish, Lagos state will never ever
experience blackout, there would be electricity 24 hours a day. There
are quite a lot of things that would come along with, that would create
so many jobs. I think Lagos will be one of the fastest growing cities in
Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
I can assure you that we would do our own bit in terms of your efforts
in policing Lagos, for security and whatever the need is, feel free to
call us, we would partner with you and whatever you want us to do to
make Lagos a better place. It’s not a small project. We would have
challenge in getting people to work there, because at the height of it,
we would have almost close to 38,000 people working at the same
location, this is something that we have to partner with the state
government. Having 38,000 people on one site, not every one of them
will be from the community, others will be from other states, there
would be cultural issues and all that, we need to integrate everybody
to ensure that the whole thing work out fine,”

President Buhari Orders Attorney General To lnvestigate Top Ranking Military Officers

Due to the recent allegations by Amnesty International, President
Buhari has assured that his government will closely study the report
released and take the appropriate action.
In a statement released by Garba Shehu, he indicated that the
president has already given the Attorney General of the Federation his
first assignment, which is to investigate the allegations laid against
top ranking military officials including the retired Chief of Army Staff,
Ihejirika.
“The president is quite disturbed by the allegations contained in the
report, the next step is to look into the allegations and confirm or
disprove the disturbing details. This is in addition to the internal
inquiry he asked the armed services to undertake by themselves,” he
said.
He also emphasised President Buhari’s commitment to human rights,
and his promise that there would be no human rights abuses under his
government.
“Any allegation of human rights abuse that takes place during the
tenure of President Buhari’s government will be swiftly investigated
and dealt with,” he said.
The report by Amnesty International, published June 3, accused the
military of being responsible for the deaths of 8,000 prisoners.

APC makes U-turn, accepts Saraki as Senate President

The National Chairman, All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-
Oyegun, on Friday said the party had accepted Senator Bukola Saraki as
the President of the Senate.
He said the reality was that Saraki’s colleagues had duly elected him
and the party was ready to live with the reality.
Odigie-Oyegun spoke with State House correspondents shortly after
joining members of the transition committee set up by President
Muhammadu Buhari to present their report to the President at the
Defence House, Abuja.
Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu
Dogara, both of the APC emerged as leaders of the National Assembly
on Tuesday against the directives of the party, which had earlier asked
its members to vote for Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila.
Since their emergence, the party had insisted that Saraki, Dogara and
their supporters would be sanctioned.
When asked specifically whether the party would accept Saraki as the
President of the Senate, Odigie-Oyegun said, “Of course! He has been
duly elected by his colleagues. We have a reality and we must live with
it.”
On Saraki’s aborted visit to the APC secretariat on Thursday, the party
chairman said there were a lot of consultations going on at that time
and he could not have been in two places at the same time.
He however said party chiefs were already talking with Saraki and
would not want to make a noise about it.
He said, “Nothing went wrong (on Saraki’s aborted visit), there were a
lot of consultations and you can’t be in two places at the same time.
“So, it was not comfortable for us, but we have been talking. We don’t
want to make a song and dance of it, everything is being put in proper
perspective.”
On the crisis that erupted in the party after the elections in the
National Assembly, Odigie-Oyegun said the APC had faced greater
challenges before and the latest one too would pass away.
“It is not the first or second time we have passed through this kind of
scenario and we came out strong. This may not even be the last time,
we come out every time stronger and more determined,” he said.
The party chairman said what happened was within the APC family and
they were sorting it out within the family.
He added that aggrieved persons who threatened to go to court were
doing so within their rights.
“People say they are going to court which is their right, but as a
party, we are looking at everything and we are coming out strong,” he
explained.
