Abuja - The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), local human rights organisation, has paid tribute Dr Ameyo Stella, who recently passed on after contracting the Ebola virus from the Liberian-America, Patrick Sawyer, the country's first casualty.
"We join other well-meaning Nigerians in mourning and eulogizing this Amazon who stood her ground where many would have capitulated and left the nation to reel in the aftermath of the spread of the dreaded virus," TMG Chairman, Zik Ibrahim, stated.
He said the decease medical professional was the reason behind the quarantining of Sawyer.
"We shudder to imagine the extent of damage Patrick Sawyer would have done if he had been allowed to continue his disastrous voyage, with the implication of spreading the virus further into Nigeria."
The group added that the memories of her valiant action would remain indelible in the minds of Nigerians.
"Painfully, the cold fingers of death have snatched away this committed and dedicated medical practitioner. She will surely join the pantheon great historical figures who gave up their lives, so that others could live. This is no mean sacrifice and the memory of her act of courage, would be engraved in the pages of Nigeria's history," Ibrahim stated.
The group called on all Nigerians holding positions of trust both in the public and private sector to emulate the firm and courageous attitude of the late doctor.
"We call on the Federal Government to take steps to ensure that this heavy price she paid is not in vain. Government should immediately immortalize this exceptional Nigerian. Steps should also be taken to comfort her traumatized family. Doing this will going a long way in reversing the notion that Nigeria does not appreciate its heroes."
