Cholera kills 5 in Borno

At least five people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency have been killed by cholera in a displaced persons camp in Borno State, an official has said.

The North-East Zonal Office of National Emergency Management Agency said on Friday that at least five people have died following suspected cholera outbreak at the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camp in Biu Local Government Area of Borno.

A statement issued by the Information Officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, in Maiduguri on Saturday noted that NEMA had already activated its Search And Rescue Epidemic Response Plan ( SAREEP) at the camp to prevent further death.

It noted that “additional staff from the Agency and doctors from Medicine Sans Frontiers MSF (Doctors without borders) have been despatched to assist red cross officials and other stakeholders at the camp’s clinic.

“The MSF had also donated some drugs and disinfectants to complement the drugs already provided by NEMA and other donors,’’ the Agency said.
It added that “additional pit latrines and a clinic have been erected in the camp to decongest the existing facilities.

“Some leaders among the IDPs were also trained on hygiene and sanitation with a view to maintaining clean environment, while safe drinking water was also provided.’’

The camp is one of those where tens of thousands of people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency stay.
The insurgency, which has killed over 13,000 people has ravaged northern Nigeria since 2009, with Borno State as the main base of the insurgents.
