Mr Entwistle also pledged the American government’s support to Nigeria’s displaced persons with food, medical care and education.

“As you fight corruption, we offer technical assistance, training for investigators and prosecutors and a commitment to ensuring that no stolen funds are landed through banking systems in the United States.“As you improve the business climate, we encourage trade and investment.

#News - NEMA Assures Jos Residents Of Normalcy After Twin Attacks

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has given an assurance that normalcy has returned to the sites of two bomb explosions in Jos, Plateau State’s capital, north-central Nigeria.

The agency’s statement is coming after a bomb attack on a restaurant and another on a mosque left at least 44 people dead and about 47 others injured in Jos.

In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, NEMA’s North-West Coordinator, Abdulsalam Mohammed, confirmed that regularity had returned to the scene of the incident.

Mr Mohammed, said: “The two scenes of the incident have been cordoned by the security agencies, while NEMA and other major stakeholders are in the respective hospitals monitoring the situation of the victims”.

The NEMA official also pointed out the challenges encountered by the agency, expressing optimism that the situation had improved.

“In a normal situation, our challenges are always crowd control but this time around, the situation has improved because we have some volunteers we trained on casualty handling and emergency response.

“They have been handy to us and they really assisted us in ensuring that the casualties were quickly evacuated to the respective hospitals,” he said.

Mohammed further stressed that hospitals, where the victims
of the explosion were admitted, were appealing to the general public for donation of blood, observing that they were short of personnel.

He commended the Nigeria Medical Association for calling off its
industrial action and the deployment of medical practitioners to hospitals where the victims were been treated.

“Thank God I reliably gathered that the Nigeria Medical Association has called off its strike and they are releasing some of their doctors particularly from the Jos University Teaching Hospital, to other hospitals, where the casualties are
taken to, for proper medical attention,” the NEMA Official said.

#News - #Iraq jet accidentally bombs Baghdad, killing eight

A bomb fell from an Iraqi Sukhoi warplane and exploded in eastern Baghdad on Monday because of a “technical problem”, killing at least eight people and wounding 17, officials said.

“One of the bombs became stuck because of a technical problem, and
during its (the aircraft’s) return to base it fell on… houses in Baghdad Jadida,” security spokesman Brigadier General Saad Maan said.

The pilot tried six times to drop the bomb, which became stuck while
he was carrying out strikes against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, but was unable to dislodge it “mechanically or manually,” the defence ministry said in a statement.
But the bomb came loose as the plane overflew Baghdad to land at its base, the ministry said.

The governor of Baghdad province, Ali al-Tamimi,called for the Rasheed air base, where the plane was bound, to be moved to a non-residential area.

Tamimi said he contacted the air force and was told the plane was
returning from the Haditha area in Anbar province, which is surrounded by IS.

The explosion ripped through small houses in Baghdad Jadida, tearing
down walls, smashing roofs and leaving bricks and other rubble piled
in the street.

“Our house was destroyed,” said Ali Jassem, a 27-year-old interior
ministry employee.

Jassem said that if an accidental bombing can happen in an area where there is no fighting, “God knows the extent of the events happening” in combat zones.

Iraq received Sukhoi Su-25 jets from Russia and Iran last year as it
sought to bolster its fledgling air force to combat IS, which overran
large parts of the country.

The Su-25s are robust aircraft designed for ground attack missions,
but Iraq’s Sukhoi fleet is made up of ageing planes that have seen
heavy use as Baghdad’s forces battle to push the jihadists back.
The US agreed to sell Baghdad 36 F-16 warplanes, but none have been
delivered to Iraq so far.

The first batch of the jets has instead been sent to Arizona, where
Iraqi F-16 pilots are training.

One of the pilots, Brigadier Rasid Mohammed Sadiq, was killed in a
crash during an aerial refuelling exercise at the end of June.

#News - #Israel says 6 Bedouins arrested for supporting IS

Israel has arrested six Bedouin Arabs, including four teachers, for
allegedly supporting the extremist Islamic State group, the domestic
security service said Monday.

The six men, all members of the same family, were relatives of two
people who already travelled to Syria to fight alongside jihadists, Israeli media said.

Around 30 Arab Israelis have already made their way to Syria to fight
for Islamist groups against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the country’s more than four-year civil war, according to the authorities.

The men met “in secret to study the doctrine of Islamic State”, a
statement from the Shin Bet intelligence agency said, adding they had intended to “spread the ideology of this group among their family and friends,” and that some had wanted to travel to Syria.

It did not give further details, including the date of their arrest.

Several Arab Israelis have been arrested after returning from Syria, and convicted for attempts to join Syrian rebels.

IS purportedly executed an Arab Israeli in March who had gone to join the group, accusing him of being an Israeli spy.

Arab Israelis number around 1.4 million, just over 20 percent of Israel’s population.

They are the descendents of the 160,000 Palestinian Arabs who remained on their land when the Jewish state was established in 1948.

Israel and Syria are technically still at war following their 1967 and
1973 conflicts.

#News - World’s oldest person celebrates 116th birthday in NY

She was a teenager during World War I and her life spans three centuries. On Monday, New Yorker Susannah Mushatt Jones celebrated her 116th birthday as the world’s oldest living person.

Guinness World Records announced the occasion and released
photographs of Jones, dressed smartly in a white jacket, black dress
and matching hat, being presented with a framed certificate.

The former live-in housekeeper, known as “T” to her 100 nieces and
nephews, was born on July 6, 1899. She became the record holder at
the age of 115 years and 346 days as of June 17, Guinness said.

She was to celebrate her birthday with two parties — with family on Monday and a larger gathering on Tuesday at her Brooklyn public housing community with friends, neighbors and officials.

Her life began in the final months of the 19th century, took in the full sweep of the 20th and has witnessed the start of the 21st century.

Jones, an African American, was born in Alabama to a father who
picked cotton to support his wife and 10 children. She was accepted
into college, but her parents could not afford the tuition.

So in 1922 she left for New Jersey, and then moved to New York a
year later to work as a live-in housekeeper and nanny.

“Sleep!” she told Guinness World Records when asked for the secret of her longevity. She is blind and hard of hearing, but is not bed-bound and “only takes two medications a day,” the website said.

In 2005, when she celebrated her 106th birthday, she told New York’s housing authority: “I never drink or smoke.”

“I surround myself with love and positive energy. That’s the key to long life and happiness,” she was quoted as saying.

The record for the oldest person to ever live is held by Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

#News - Two pilots killed in Russian military jet crash

Two pilots of a Russian military aircraft were killed Monday when
their jet crashed during a training mission in the far east of the
country, the defence ministry said, the latest in a string of accidents involving military planes.

“The aircraft suffered a crash during take-off in a planned training
flight near the Khurba aerodrome. The two pilots were killed,” the
ministry said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies.

The wreckage of the Sukhoi Su-24 jet created a 20-metre-wide crater, state-owned RIA Novosti news agency reported, but no casualties or property damage were recorded.

The defence ministry dispatched an investigation team to the scene
to probe the causes of the plane’s demise, TASS reported. Officials did
not offer any explanations for the crash and could not be reached for further comment on the incident.

The commander of the Russian Air Force declared a moratorium on flights of Sukhoi fighter jets until the
reasons behind the latest crash were uncovered, Russian media
reported.

The incident is Russia’s fifth military plane accident in the last
month and the second crash in the last few days, raising questions
about the safety of Russian military aircraft.

On Friday, the pilot of a Mikoyan MiG-29 jet fighter that crashed in
the Krasnodar region managed to eject himself from the cockpit. A
faulty engine in thought to have caused the incident.

The Sukhoi Su-24 dates to the Soviet era but is still used by the
Russian air force.

The last deadly crash involving a Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jet occurred
in February on the outskirts of the southern Russian city of
Volgograd, TASS reported.

#Sports - FIFA bans head of World Cup committee for seven years

Football’s world body on Monday banned the former head of the FIFA
evaluation committee for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups for seven years
for breaches of “confidentiality”.

FIFA’s ethics committee adjudicatory chamber banned Harold Mayne-
Nicholls, a former Chilean FA president, “from taking part in any kind
of football-related activity at national and international level for a
period of seven years”, a statement said.

The world body did not give details of the charges against Mayne-
Nicholls, but said it was for a breach of a confidentiality rule in FIFA’s
code of ethics.

#Sports - Nigeria will qualify for 2016 Olympics, says Samson Siasia

National Under-23 team coach, Samson Siasia, says he has a team of
good players to pick ahead of the July 19 qualifier for the Rio 2016
Olympic Games football event against Congo in Port Harcourt.

The U23 team coach said after his boys’ 3-1 defeat of 36 Lions FC in
a friendly match at the weekend that the presence of Flying Eagles’
players in the team has given him the opportunity to work on the side’s attack.

Siasia also disclosed that he has shut the door on some invited former
Flying Eagles’ players, including goalkeeper Dele Alampasu, for
failing to report to camp on schedule.

“Although we did not have the luxury of playing international friendly matches, we will ensure that these boys will come together and blend for the task ahead.

“We still have about two weeks to train together before we make our final
selection for Congo, so we still have enough players to select for the
game. Our target for now is to win this game in order to take us
close to the Olympics football ticket and I have seen commitment in
the players. They are there with their whole heart and I know they
will make Nigerians proud when we play Congo in Port Harcourt.

“We have just acquired the videos of Congo and we are watching
them to guide us.

#Sports - Disconnect emotionally from Chelsea, Lehmann tells Cech

Arsenal’s goalkeeping great, Jens Lehmann, thinks Petr Cech can
help lift the Gunners to the next level – but only if he sets aside any
lingering love for Chelsea.

The Czech goalkeeper brought a long transfer saga to an end by signing for the Gunners last week in a deal worth £11million. He spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning four Premier League titles and building a warm relationship with club staff and fans.

And Lehmann feels Cech can make a big difference at the Emirates, but thinks he has to put his Chelsea connections out of his mind as soon as possible in order to acclimatise to his new surroundings.

“Before you can have it in your heart to win titles again, you have to get rid of the love you had before,” Lehmann told the Sun on Sunday.

“As a professional, he must get over [his relationship with Chelsea] and needs to know Arsenal want him to win things again for them.

“That is not an easy thing to get over psychologically… it can take a few weeks, even a few months.”

Lehmann also had words of encouragement for Wojciech Szczesny,
who is expected to play second fiddle to Cech in north London next
term.

“It’s disappointing when you lose your place,” added the German.
“Wojciech has to work really hard and know that nothing else counts
apart from performing hard on the training pitch and in games.”

#News - Philippines confirms second MERS case

A foreigner who flew to the Philippines from the Middle East has become
the second confirmed case of MERS in the country, the health
department said Monday, as a deadly outbreak in South Korea spreads
alarm across Asia.

The 36-year-old male patient, whose nationality was not disclosed, has
been put in isolation at a government facility to contain the virus,
Health Secretary Janette Garin said.

“We can see he is getting better,” Garin told a news conference,
adding the man had a “low viral load” indicating his infection was not
extremely serious.

“There is no reason to panic and we appeal to the public to respect the
privacy of the patient.”

The man fell ill on July 2, having earlier arrived in the country from
Saudi Arabia by way of Dubai, she said, declining to give more details.

A Filipina nurse who returned from Saudi Arabia in February became
the first person in the Philippines to test positive for MERS but she
later recovered.

Although Garin stressed that there had been no cases of MERS
infection through casual contact in the Philippines, the health
department was tracing people who may have had contact with the
patient.

They include all those who were on the same flight as the infected man,
Garin said.

In South Korea, which is suffering the worst outbreak of MERS
outside Saudi Arabia, 185 people have been diagnosed with the disease
with 33 fatalities, the government there said.Of those infected, 41 remain hospitalised, with 11 in a critical
condition.

The Philippine health department has been on alert in recent weeks for
the possible entry of the virus that causes the Middle East Respiratory
Syndrome, particularly among the 88,000 South Koreans living in the
country.

Health authorities earlier examined three South Korean expatriates
who developed respiratory ailments, but all tested negative for MERS,
department spokesman Lyndon Lee Suy said.

Elsewhere in Asia, Malaysia reported a case before the South Korean
outbreak in May, while China reported a person with MERS who had
travelled to the country after recent exposure in South Korea,
according to the WHO.

#Sports - Williams sisters renew rivalry, as Venus eyes Serena Slam

With her heart racing as she stood two points from defeat in her
third round match at Wimbledon, Serena Williams looked in serious
danger of missing out on a 26th on-court date with older sister,
Venus.

For a fleeting second, the American even contemplated finding “a
dance class” while she “hung around to watch Venus play” as brave
Brit Heather Watson looked like she would deny the sisters a chance
to renew their Wimbledon rivalry by toppling the world number one.

Those dance classes were soon a distant memory as U.S., Australian
and French Open champion, Serena, kept alive her dreams of
completing the “Serena Slam” by setting up a fifth All England Club
showdown with her sister.

A contest that will feature two women, who between them have hoisted the RosewaterDish 10 times since 2000,has the potential to be a classic but could very well turn out to be the ultimate anti-climax as has been the case in
many of their previous meetings.

“I’m one of the few people that has experienced what it’s like to
play, in my case, my brother (Patrick) on the tour,” said American
great, John McEnroe.

“I know this is wrong but I thought to myself if I lose to my brother
I’m going to go and jump off the top of the Empire State Building.

“I love my brother and it should be that if you’re going to lose to
anyone, you want it to be your brother. But there is some weird
dynamics.

“I’ve always been amazed that Serena and Venus have been able to
handle it so well because the older person is supposed to win. Serena
is feeling a lot of pressure as she’s going for history, go for the
grand slam, so Venus has got an opportunity.”

Serena leads their overall head-to-head 14-11, and is 3-2 at the
grass court major having won their last grand slam meeting in
straight sets in the 2009 Wimbledon final.

Not everyone was sure if Serena was engaging in some mind games
when she declared Venus was “in better form than I am and I think
she has a little bit of an advantage going into that match.

“I’m playing the toughest player I’ve played in women’s tennis.
That’s never fun.”
Five-times champion, Venus, however, took that observation with a
pinch of salt.

“There’s no easy points against Serena. No matter how Serena’s
playing, she knows how to win,” said 16th seed Venus, who a year
ago snapped a run of five successive losses to her sister in their last
meeting in Montreal.

What is true is that Venus’s progress has been drama free and her
run includes a 6-0, 6-0 walloping of the unfortunate Madison
Brengle in the opening round.

The one thing they both agreed was that it was “unfortunate the
match was so soon” as today’s clash will be the first time they have
met at the All England Club before the semi-finals.

“We’ll leave everything out on the court. When it’s done, we’ll go back to regular life,” Serena, seeking a 21st major, said about a rivalry that is now in its 17th year.

“I mean, she’s my sister today. She’s my sister next week. She’s my sister next year. I think that’s a little more important than a match.

#News - Governor warns against social media scammers using his name

He said some unscrupulous characters were attempting to capitalise on
his goodwill to dupe members of the public, particularly, his associates.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has alerted Nigerians on
the activities of some unknown people impersonating him through the
social media to defraud the public.

Ambode said this in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary,
Habib Aruna on Friday, July 3.

He said some unscrupulous characters are attempting to capitalise on
his goodwill to dupe members of the public, particularly, his associates.

Ambode said he had been inundated with complaints from his associates
of the rapid proliferation of his identity in cyberspace under different
platforms, especially the social media.

"A faceless character, who currently operates with the e-mail:
a_ambode@yahoo.com, is going about soliciting for CVs from his
friends and acquaintances for appointments," Ambode said.

He also alerted the public on the multiple identities these faceless
persons operate on facebook with his name and photographs.

Ambode, therefore, urged Nigerians to disregard entreaties from such
persons, calling on them to report to the law enforcement agencies to
ensure that those behind the nefarious act could be made to face the
wrath of the law.

#Health - Soft drinks kill 184,000 adults every year - Study finds

133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 deaths from cardiovascular
disease and 6,450 deaths from cancer were caused by fizzy drinks,
fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweetened ice teas in 2010.

The dangers of fizzy, sugary drinks have once again been highlighted
as scientists have said they kill 184,000 adults every year.

It further said those under 45 consume more artificially sweetened
drinks and are more at risk of diabetes and obesity.

According to Telegraph , the worldwide study is the first to estimate
deaths and disability from diabetes, heart disease, and cancers caused
by the drinks.

It added that 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 deaths from
cardiovascular disease and 6,450 deaths from cancer were caused by
fizzy drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweetened ice teas in
2010.

The study did not include pure fruit juices and all drinks had at least 50
kcal per eight US ounces (0.23 litres) serving or just over two thirds
of a standard pop can.

According to Dr Dariush Mozaffarian , Dean of the Friedman School of
Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston said "many
countries in the world have a significant number of deaths occurring
from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages"
She therefore said it should be a global priority to substantially reduce
or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet as there are no
health benefits from them.

The study based its estimates of consumption from 62 dietary surveys
including 611,971 individuals conducted between 1980 and 2010 across
51 countries, along with data on national availability of sugar in 187
countries and other information.

Based on meta-analyses of other published evidence on health harms of
sugar-sweetened beverages, it calculated the direct impact on
diabetes and the obesity-related effects on cardiovascular disease,
diabetes and cancer.

It found sugar drinks caused more deaths in Mexico with 405 deaths
per million adults equal to 24,000 total deaths followed by the US with
an estimated 125 deaths per million adults or 25,000 total deaths.

Japan also came in with the estimated percentage of deaths less than
1% of over 65 years old, but 30% in Mexican adults under 45.

Three quarters of all deaths are linked to developing countries.
Younger adults were however more at risk of chronic illnesses than
older people.

The study which was published in the journal, Circulation, raised
concern on the health impact of sugar-sweetened beverage intake on
the young as younger adults form a large sector of the workforce in
many countries.

#News - 16-year old girl dies after not having bowel movement for 8 weeks

16-year old Emily Titterington had a phobia of using the restroom and
would frequently withhold her stools for up to two months.

A teenager in the United Kingdom has died from a heart attack, after
not having bowel movement for 8 weeks.

According to Telegraph , 16-year old Emily Titterington had a phobia of
using the restroom and would frequently withhold her stools for up to
two months.

Eventually her bowel grew so large it compressed her chest cavity and
caused the displacement of other organs.

Titterington's death was revealed during an inquest which heard how
her life could have been saved with appropriate treatment but she had
refused to be medically examined.

Home Office pathologist Dr Amanda Jeffery said her symptoms were in
keeping with a condition known as "stool withholding", which is more
frequent in children.

According to the inquest, Titterington who had mild autism, suffered
with bowel problems for most of her life but doctors had been unable to
pinpoint the cause.

Furthermore it was learnt that in the period leading up to her death,
Emily's mother had battled in vain to persuade her to be medically
examined.

Emily collapsed at her home in St Austell on February 8, 2013, and
though paramedics desperately tried to revive her, she was later
pronounced dead in hospital.

Describing the evening that led up to her death, Paramedic Lee Taylor
said he came to Emily's home that evening and found her looking pale as
she complained of pain between her shoulders.

But she refused to go the hospital. However later on when he came back
to the house after her parents called again he said "as she moved away
I could see that her abdomen was grossly extended. Her lower ribs had
been pushed out further than her pubic bone - I was shocked."

During the inquest, it was also revealed that Titterington hadn't used
the convenience in 6 - 8 weeks, although her family had tried a number
of different remedies for her bowel condition including homeopathic
pills, and a technique known as Body Talk, which involved so-called
"distance healing".

#Lifestyle - "Relationship Tips" 4 signs your man is a keeper

How do you know your man is worth keeping? According relationship
experts, keepers exhibit a set of beliefs, actions, and ideals that keep
relationships thriving through the good times and the bad.

Although physical attraction also counts in choosing a partner, these
keeper qualities are really important. Which means for the single ladies
still searching be sure to check if the man in your next relationship is a
keeper.

Dr. Randi Gunther of Good Men Project lists few of these qualities of
a keeper:

1. They’re self-accountable Keepers are not afraid to question
themselves. They clearly put knowledge ahead of ego-preservation
and seek ways to help their relationships stay successful. They ask
themselves what they could do to change them for the better. They
are not out to win at their partner’s expense. Yet, keepers don’t
automatically give up their point of view when challenged. You know
them by their combination of ego, strength, and flexibility. They
not only hold their integrity under fire, but also expect that kind of
behavior from people they respect.

2. They see humor as a sacred part of relationships People who find the
humor in life are more resilient to disappointments. They don’t
laugh inappropriately or use humor to mock, but they do maintain
perspective that keeps them aware. Yet, they also have a keen
sense of perspective, and don’t use humor to lighten up situations
that need to stay serious. They have learned the value of timing and
a compassionate heart, and can process sorrow and joy with the
same gentle appreciation for life.

3. They’re authentic Keepers feel responsible for what they say or do.
They don’t pretend to portray someone (or something) they are
not, or automatically agree with something that they don’t. They
wish to remain transparent because they don’t play games or want
to participate in any. They’d rather hear the truth from others,
too, even if it’s uncomfortable. Keepers choose partners who value
them for their honesty. They don’t take that right lightly, nor do
they use their authenticity to unnecessarily point out other’s
faults.

4. They seek continuous transformation Keepers are genuinely
committed to learning from the past and projecting the future
more effectively. To do that, they willingly seek constant new ways
of seeing their lives unfold. They learn from their mistakes and
believe in their dreams. Most people will choose security and
predictability over challenge or change. Keepers successfully blend
the two. They cherish traditions, but always search for better
ways to help themselves and others. This way of being makes them
ever interesting and exciting to constantly be around.
