APC slams Jonathan over presidential declaration
Abuja - The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday came hard on
President Goodluck Jonathan for declaring his second term ambition,
a day after the massacre of almost 50 students in Potiskum, Yobe
State, reports Thisday.
The party described Jonathan’s action as utterly insensitive and
absolutely callous.
The party noted that Jonathan’s decision to go ahead with the
declaration despite the death of the students meant the President
was dancing on the graves of the students as well as of all the victims
of the Boko Haram insurgency.
The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai
Mohammed said since this President has chosen to celebrate a national
tragedy, Nigerians should also be ready to celebrate his electoral
failure in the 2015 presidential election.

Jonathan's presidency in 2015 will attract more democracy dividens
Abuja - Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom said the continuation of
President Goodluck Jonathan in office in 2015 would ensure the
delivery of more dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
He stated this on Tuesday in Abuja during the formal declaration of
President Jonathan to contest the presidency in 2015.
Akpabio, who is also the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, said
the governors supported President Jonathan for a second
term because of his achievements in the past three years.
“We went down and we saw the dams and the irrigation projects in
the north; we saw what you are doing in the railway system.
"We noticed your efforts at empowering farmers; we took cognisance
of your efforts in the power sector; we looked at the many roads that
you have done across Nigeria.
“After taking cognisance of your efforts, we resolved that we are
not going to contest against you.
"We are not going to show any interest in the presidency; that we
must give you a second term in office for you to complete your good
works,’’ he said.
According to him, the governors are confident that President
Jonathan would consolidate on his achievements and continue
transforming Nigeria if given a second term.
Akpabio, however, reminded President Jonathan that the battle ahead
was a difficult one, adding that the route to 2015 would not be
smooth, but assured that he would triumph at the end.
"Victory belongs to all of us; victory remains that of PDP; we will
never be intimidated; we will not be intimidated; do not be
intimidated; we are behind you.
"Those who are behind you are more than those who are against you.
In 2015 all Nigerians are going to tell you that we are behind you,’’
Akpabio said.
He described President Jonathan as the biblical David, saying
that ``you are fighting all the wars today so that future Nigerian
presidents will have peace’’.
Gov. Akpabio noted that Jonathan had taken the right step by
establishing the Almajirai schools, particularly in Northern Nigeria
and other schools in the South.
This step, he said, would ensure the education of Nigerian children
and that they were not misled into terrorism and acts insurgency in
future.
He added that PDP governors were against terror, enemies of
progress, propaganda, and blackmail.
Akpabio described members of the opposition as selfish politicians who
had nothing to offer Nigerians and should therefore not be allowed to
take over the Federal Government in 2015.
"We cannot hand over our future to people who are blackmailers and
propagandists,” Akpbio said.
He, however, expressed optimism that the PDP would win at least 30
states in 2015, adding that it would reclaim states it lost to the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, Alhaji Haliru Mohammed, Chairman of the Presidential
Declaration Committee, in his welcome speech, said that Nigerians
wanted President Jonathan back in 2015 because of his antecedent in
office.
The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, said Jonathan`s achievements
in his transformation agenda had endeared him to Nigerians, adding
that the people wanted him back because they believed in him.
The Eagle Square, venue of the declaration, turned to a carnival
ground as different musicians took time to entertain the large
crowd.
The crowd comprised over 700 pro-Jonathan support groups, market
women, members of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria
(TAN) and members of the diplomatic corps.
Petty traders also used the opportunity of the large crowd to make
brisk businesses while security operatives had a herculean task to
ensure orderliness at the venue.

Presidents do not quit during war, Jonthan replies APC
Abuja - Following the call by opposition party, All Progressive
Congress (APC) asking President Goodluck Jonhathan to resign, the
president has said no president quits during war situations in the
country, Punch reports.
Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, in a
statement in Abuja said Nigerians should ignore the call as no
president in the world abandons his position during war situations.
Leaders of the APC including former Lagos State Governor, Bola
Tinubu and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu
Tambuwal, had urged President Goodluck Jonathan to resign from
office for running a system that does not have the interest of the
country at heart.
Okupe said when terrorists attacked the United States of America in
September 2001, the leaders of the Democratic Party did not demand a
resignation of President George Bush but rather they rose in defence
of the American nation to support the various measures taken by the
President to defeat the al-Qaeda terrorists.

Washington Post slams GEJ for using the #bringback hashtag for campaign

Below is what Washington Post wrote about president Jonathan's supporters using the #bringback hashtag for his campaign
It was the social media campaign of the year. #BringBackOurGirls awoke the world to the ravages of Boko Haram, an al-Qaeda-linked terror group in Nigeria, and the plight of the millions of people who live in the midst of their insurgency. At the heart of the message were hundreds of missing schoolgirls, abducted in April from the remote village of Chibok by Boko Haram fighters, who vowed to make them into slaves. The #BringBackOurGirls hashtag channeled both sympathy from abroad and local outrage and concern in Nigeria, with many angry at the government of President Goodluck Jonathan for being unable to free the captured women.
But four months later, the girls have yet to be brought back despite the efforts of the Nigerian military as well as U.S. counter-terrorism forces deployed in neighboring Chad. More than 200 girls remain missing in suspected Boko Haram captivity. Others have perished from snakebite, illness and deprivation in the wild.
Boko Haram itself has continued its slaughter this summer, and seized more territory in the country's restive northeast. Over the weekend, it stormed towns along Nigeria's border with Cameroon, killing dozens of innocents.
Nigerian forces are now fighting Boko Haram in pitched battles around Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, the main hotbed of Boko Haram's operations. The U.N. reports that at least 1.5 million people have been displaced by the conflict since Jonathan's government declared a state of emergency in May.
But the gravity of the moment hasn't stopped some in Nigeria from appropriating the tragic hashtag for rather cynical purposes. Banners emerged in the capital Abuja over the weekend showing Jonathan alongside a new slogan: #BringBackGoodluck2015. The campaign appears to be the work of supporters of the president, keen for his reelection in presidential polls next February. It's not clear whether Jonathan has officially endorsed the new hashtag, but its seeming ubiquity suggests that he is not opposed to it.
