Purported pic of Boko Haram members killed in Biu today

Biu town in Borno state was attacked by
members of Boko Haram this morning.

Fortunately, the military was able to repel the
attack and kill/arrest many militants. I just got a
gruesome pic after the cut supposedly from a
military officer at the scene in Borno which
purportedly shows members of Boko Haram
killed during the attack earlier today.

AYC: Man City stop Iheanacho, Nwakali

English Premier League champions Manchester
City have informed the Nigeria Football
Federation that they will not release Kelechi
Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali for the 2015
African Youth Championship in March in Senegal.

Both players were among nine foreign-based
pros called up by the Flying Eagles for the AYC.

The players were given a Thursday deadline to
join up with the country’s U20s in their training
camp in Kaduna.

But in a mail signed by City scouting and
recruitment operations manager, Fergal Harkin,
the EPL side said Iheanacho was injured and
may not be fit till mid-March, while Nwakali is
about to be loaned out to a club in Europe.

“With regards Kelechi Iheanacho, he is currently
injured. We believe he will be fit around the
middle of March but can keep in contract
regarding his recovery,” read Tuesday’s mail to
the NFF in part.

“For Chidiebere Nwakali, we are currently in the
process of agreeing his loan deal to Europe and
he will not be available to meet up with the
national team until further notice.
“At this moment in time, we feel it is best for his
development that he cements his place in the
club side.”
Under FIFA rules, Man City are not obliged to
release the players as the competition is an age-
grade event.

Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles will take on Nigeria
National League side Spotlight of Katsina in
another test game on Wednesday. The match
will be played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in
Kaduna with the kick-off fixed for 11am.

Spotlight, who have defender Mustapha Abdullahi
with the Nigeria U20 side, are gearing up for
promotion to the Nigeria top flight in the
forthcoming season.

The Katsina club, who placed 10th on the
Nigeria National League Division A table, have
made several top signings to match their
ambitions.

Spotlight have been on a pre-season training
tour of Kaduna and have so far won three and
drawn three of their matches. Their own loss
thus far was to Jamba Aacdemy, who beat them
2-1.

The Flying Eagles, who are getting set for the
2015 African Youth Championship in Senegal in
March, are also likely to battle league champions
Kano Pillars by the weekend also in Kaduna.

The Nigeria U20s are also billed to feature in an
expanded Super 4 tournament in Abuja, which
will begin next week. The other teams for the
tourney are Nigeria U23 team, Pillars, Enyimba,
Dolphin and Warri Wolves.
The Nigerian clubs are preparing for CAF
Champions League and Confederation Cup
matches in February.

Designer Kunbi Oyelesi recounts how she was robbed in broad day light at CMS

Below is what Olakunbi Oyelese the Creative
Director of April ByKunbi brand shared on
instagram

So I wasn't going to put this out here but I
spoke to a few people recently that have
had or heard of a similar experience.
Years ago we felt safe enough driving in
Lagos as long as your windows were up
and you're locked in the car... Even the
people with no ac in their cars would sweat
it out, literally.
The picture above was an attack/robbery
that happened to me in broad day light last
week Thursday (8th January). Continue...
Going home via CMS area, there was heavy
traffic due to the campaign. I didn't really
mind as I had someone driving... All of a
sudden I saw people running so I knew for
sure something was happening ahead...
Checked to make sure my doors were
locked. Next thing I see is bunch of thugs
going to car windows, my driver asked me
to keep my iPad and threw my bag to the
back. He hadn't even finished saying "they
are robbing" before one of the thugs started
banging the driver's window demanding for
money...he cracked the glass open a little
and quickly gave him N500...
Then he started demanding for phones,
more money. By this time there were 2 of
them by my side banging at my window,
asking me for my phones and my bag. Next
thing I hear is glass shattering and I see
the thug holding a cutlass, he leans in to
grab the drivers phone (he was charging it)
and was reaching for my bag. I honestly
don't know HOW my car got on the curb as
there was no where else to turn to..But
thank God we escaped, saw bags littered all
over the ground.. Vandalized cars parked
with no one inside.... My drivers hand
bleeding.. Brings me to the point of this
long story... We are not safe, no one is
Safe. Either we accept it or not, Nigeria is
in trouble! To think that was child's play
compared to what people are going through
in the North is terrifying.

There was a time poverty was our only big
problem, I strongly believe even the less
privileged people will take being safe over
anything right now.

The numbers are disturbing!
20,200,500,2000!!! Killed in cold blood all
because of what exactly?? Power?
Religion?

I love Nigeria.. No matter where I go I
always miss home. How do we take our
Nigeria back?? I want to be able to drive at
night with my windows Down!

Cardinal Okogie reacts to Fr Mbaka's recent outburst, says Mbaka was under the influence of another spirit

Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, the retired
Archbishop of Lagos state has reacted to the
recent statements made by Fr. Ejike Mbaka on
President Jonathan's led administration. In an
interview with Vanguard, Cardinal Okogie said
the statements made by Fr Mbaka were
abnormal and certainly not one influenced by
God's spirit but by another spirit.

According to
the respected clergyman, Mbaka's attitude is
unbecoming. He says if he had his way he would
have closed down the Enugu diocese as Fr.
Mbaka has repeatedly been involved in
controversial things which the leadership of the
diocese has not deemed fit to call him to order.
Excerpts of his interview after the cut...

How do you see the statement credited to Rev.
Father Ejike Mbaka?

Any serious priest will not speak the way he
spoke. I am not saying that he is not serious. I
will not agree with the things he said. According
to what I read in the newspapers, a few weeks
earlier, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan,
visited his Adoration Ground in Enugu and he
prayed for her. At that occasion, he was said to
have lambasted the opposition party, APC, and
now to turn around overnight and start
lambasting President Goodluck Jonathan shows
that there is something wrong somewhere.
Personally, I felt bad because it is not the place
of a priest to go to that extent. He can have his
personal opinion, but to go to the extent that he
went is abnormal.

I want you to know that he
wasn’t speaking for the church. He said he was
moved by the spirit, and I wonder what kind of
spirit was that.
He said he was under the inspiration of the
spirit.
If he was under the inspiration of the
spirit, I wonder if the spirit is that of God. I don’t
think the spirit he’s referring to is the spirit of
God. He must have been under the influence of
another spirit.

He must have been listening to a
wrong spirit.

Is the statement not embarrassing to the
Catholic Church as a whole?

Indeed, it is. But I must say to you that he was
not speaking on behalf of the church. No! No!!
No!!! Anybody with such opinion is in error. The
man cannot hold brief for the church. Pardon me,
but how can I say you are bloody fool and
anybody takes that to mean that all journalists
are bloody fools.
It’s very funny.

In a situation such as this, what does the
Catholic Church do?

Well, the Catholic Church is structured in such a
way that there are dioceses where each priest
belongs. This particular priest happens to come
from Enugu Diocese, so it is left for the bishop in
charge of that diocese to discipline him. If the
priest fails to obey the discipline, then the bishop
is obligated to report the mother to the Catholic
Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN.
You may have heard the Bishop of Abuja
Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who said that
if the priest were to be in his diocese, he would
discipline him straight. But he is not in his
diocese.
The best anyone of us can do is just to
advise him that he had gone too far and he is
free to take our advice and he may not. God
gave every one of us a free will and we are at
liberty to use the freewill as we choose.

What kind of sanction can be given to such a
priest?

It depends on his bishop. You cannot dictate for
his bishop. Don’t forget that this same man was
at loggerheads with a former governor of Enugu
State, Chimaroke Nnamanni, and it was the
same Adoration Ground in Enugu. If I have my
way, we should close that place because a lot of
things have been happening there that are out of
tune.
I think Gov. Peter Obi also went there for
prayers at one point. If I have my way, I won’t
go there for anything…

Photos: Anger, condemnation as Enugu traditional ruler accuses his subjects of witchcraft

Report by lawyer and blogger, Chukwudi
Iwuchukwu. Read below...

The story sounds like a fairy tale or a
Nollywood Epic Movie script but the story
is real and happened in Unadu community
in Enugu State.

The traditional ruler of Unadu community In
Nsukka Enugu State a retired police officer,
Barnabas Agbaji who allegedly forced
himself to become the Igwe of the town
recently elevated the act of wickedness by
arresting" two of his subjects Remigus Nwa
Ikeagwu and Silas Ameh, arbitrarily accused
them of witchcraft, convicted the accused
of being guilty of the offence of Witchcraft,
hung a tire around their necks, tied fresh
palm fronds all over their bodies and
paraded them around the community as
common criminals!!
According to a source in the community, the
Traditional Ruler has been ruling the town with
high handedness and impunity, leaving his
subjects in fear and misery, boasting that
nothing will happen to him because of his
Influence in Enugu state Government.

Tension is already running high in the community
and from my investigation, his people are
spoiling for wall threatening Fire and brimstone if
appropriate action is not taken against the ex-
policeman now.
Traditional Ruler and some of his subjects are
calling for his dethronement because his recent
bizarre action on his subjects is the height of
what they can tolerate

The question is: During his service years in the
Nigerian police, did this man ever arrest and
successfully prosecute anyone for practicing
witchcraft? Under which law did he do this?

How Nigerian student died in police custody in the US

22yr old Nigerian college student Matthew
Ajibade, (pictured) died in police custody and his
family wants to know more about what led to
his jail death.

CNN reports...

Matthew died in an isolation cell, after he
"became combative during the booking
process," according to a release from the
Chatham County Sheriff's Office in
Savannah, Georgia. During the altercation,
officials say, three deputies were injured,
including a female sergeant who suffered a
concussion and broken nose.

That doesn't square with family members'
description of the 22-year-old, whom they
described as a much-loved "geeky kid."The
Nigeria native was in Savannah studying
computer science.

Ajibade's family has hired Mark O'Mara, a
CNN legal analyst who once represented
George Zimmerman in the death of Florida
teen Trayvon Martin. The attorney hopes to
see "discourse of all available information
as soon as possible," he told CNN on
Tuesday.
Ajibade was diagnosed with bipolar disorder
three years ago and was having a medical
emergency at the time of his arrest and
confinement, O'Mara said.
Savannah police arrested Ajibade on
January 1 after receiving a call about a
domestic disturbance.

When police arrived, they witnessed Ajibade
holding a woman under a blanket,
according to an incident report. Police
uncovered the two and noticed that the
woman's "face was bruised, and her nose
was bleeding," the report says.
Officers ordered Ajibade to release the
woman, but he did not comply, the report
says, adding that when police tried to
arrest Ajibade he proceeded to "resist
apprehension in a violent manner."
He was accused of domestic violence act,
battery and obstruction of an officer. "The
sergeant is still on medical leave. The other
two remain on duty status," said Chief
Deputy Roy Harris.

A woman who he identified as his girlfriend
tried to inform police of his mental health
issues, O'Mara said.

"She also gave police a bottle of his
medication," the attorney told CNN.

The police report notes that officers
received a prescription bottle from the
alleged victim, but the name of the
prescription has been redacted.
Once at the jail, officials say, Ajibade had
to be restrained, during which he injured
the three officers. He was then moved to an
isolation cell due to his "dangerous
behavior," a police news release says.
Deputies conducted welfare checks on
Ajibade and on their second check he was
found nonresponsive, police say. First aid
was administered by the jail's medical unit
staff. Despite CPR and attempts to restart
his heart with a defibrillator, Ajibade could
not be revived, according to the release.

It's unclear how much of the event, if any,
was captured on the jail's surveillance
system, or whether officers conducted a
mental health evaluation before Ajibade's
death.

County officials declined CNN requests for
an interview, citing the ongoing
investigation. The sheriff's office has
requested that the Georgia Bureau of
Investigation conduct an independent
investigation. A GBI spokesperson said an
autopsy had been conducted, but that a
cause of death was pending toxicology
reports.
The Chatham County District Attorney's
office said a criminal investigation is
ongoing and the office will "handle the
matter further, should it become
necessary."

Obasanjo lashes out at president Jonathan again...

Former Pres. Olusegun Obasanjo today took
another swipe at the administration of Pres.
Jonathan, accusing him and his government of
depleting Nigeria's oil savings which according
to him was at $45billion when he left office and
had depreciated over time to $30billion. He
made the accusations while receiving some
South-West women leaders at his residence in
Abeokuta, earlier today
"Our economy should not have been this
bad. When I was leaving office about eight
years ago, I left a very huge reserve after
we had paid all our debts. Almost
$25billion we kept in what they called
excess crude. The excess from the budget
we were saving as reserve for the rainy
days. When we left in May 2007, the
reserve was said to have been raised to
$35billion. But today, that reserve has been
depleted!

Today, that reserve has been depleted. The
reserve we left when we finished paying all
our debts, our debts that was about
40billion dollars, that is including debt
forgiveness, the remaining debt was not
more than $3billion. Our reserve after we
had paid off this debt was about $45billion.
As I said, they continued till the end of
2007, I heard that the reserve increased to
almost $67billion before the end of the
year. Our reserve now, learnt is left with
around only $30billion. That is why the
Naira has been falling against the dollar.
What would now happen, I learnt if you
want to buy a dollar now, it’s about N192
or N195. What it means is this, what you
have been buying at N150 to a dollar, now
you need N192 or N195 to buy it. That is
the real situation. Is there any remedy?
There is, but it does not come overnight
because it means we have to give up all
the bad things we have been doing. I know
that God did not create Nigeria not to be
rich or great. Is it that the people he
created in Nigeria are not knowledgeable
enough or not intelligent enough? Or is that
they don’t know their rights? Our problems
in Nigeria, let’s look at the foundation of
our leadership. In the profession I know
very well, the military, what we normally
say is that there are no bad soldiers but
bad officers. If you see a situation where
the soldiers are not doing well, we need to
examine the officers in charge. So it is in
the family, the community, the town and
the country,” he said.
President Obasanjo said his remarks about the
state of the nation was not in any way an
expression of a personal grudge with the
President
"I have no grudges against Jonathan and I
think Jonathan equally has no grudges
against me. I’m not quarrelling with
Jonathan but all I know is that whatever is
good for Nigeria, that I’m ready to die for. I
emphasize that whatever is good for
Nigeria, is what I’m ready to defend with
my life. Whoever, I emphasize, whoever
says he would not do anything good to
Nigeria, even if he says he’s ready to go
‘konko below’, I’m ready to square it up
with such a person. I say again, whoever
that person may be, I want you to get that
correctly. If this country is going to change
for the better, it would start from the top
and if it’s going to be otherwise, it would
start from the top, too,” the former
president stressed.

We won’t sell fighter helicopters to Nigeria, US insists

The United States has defended its refusal to sell cobra helicopters to
Nigeria, saying the Federal Government is free to buy fighter jets
from any other country.

“Nigeria has purchased helicopters that originated in countries other
than the US and nothing in our decision prevents Nigeria from
obtaining weapons and equipment from other sources,” its State
Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said on Wednesday.

Psaki was responding to questions from journalists on the allegations
by the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, that
Washington declined to sell lethal arms to Nigeria.

Adefuye had also told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on
Monday that Washington was not doing enough to assist Nigeria in
combating the Boko Haram insurgency in North-East zone of the
country.

He said, “The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant
Nigeria’s request to purchase lethal equipment that would have
brought down the terrorists within a short time on the basis of the
allegations that Nigeria’s defence forces have been violating human
rights of Boko Haram suspects when captured or arrested.

“We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S.
presence in Nigeria, with their sophisticated military technology, Boko
Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly.”

But Psaki said that the US refused to sell the helicopters to Nigeria due
to concerns about the ability of the military to use and maintain them.
The cobra is a combat aircraft with the ability to climb at the rate of
8.2metres per second. It is equipped with a 20 mm M197 3-barrelled
Gatling cannon in the A/A49E-7 turret (750 rounds ammo capacity).

Psaki said there were ongoing concerns about the Nigerian military’s
protection of civilians when conducting military operations, adding
that these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities.

The State Department spokeswoman added, “Earlier this year, we
denied the transfer of some cobra attack helicopters to Nigeria due to
concerns about Nigeria’s ability to use and maintain this type of
helicopter in its effort against Boko Haram and ongoing concerns
about the Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting
military operations. We shared those concerns with Nigeria before this
decision and subsequent to it.

“We’ll continue to look for ways to deepen our cooperation with
Nigeria to help it acquire the systems and skills needed to restore
peace and security. But obviously, we’ve provided a great deal of
assistance over the past several months.”
Psaki said Washington would not have raised concerns on human rights
abuses by the Nigerian military “if we didn’t feel and others didn’t feel
that they were warranted.”

She assured the Nigerian government that the US was ready to help
Nigeria train and improve the effectiveness of its military.
Urging the Federal Government to investigate allegations of abuses by
the military, Psaki stated that the US valued its long standing
relationship with Nigeria.
She said that Washington had been offering various forms of
assistance to Nigeria, including sharing intelligence with its armed
forces .

Psaki said, “Let me just lay out the facts of our assistance: Over the
past six months, the United States has started sharing intelligence
with Nigeria, began training a new army battalion and held numerous
high-level discussions with Nigerian authorities on additional measures
to best address the Boko Haram threat.
“We have also provided and approved sales of military equipment to its
armed forces. These decisions are made, of course, after careful
scrutiny to ensure they conform with the US law.”

Our correspondents could not get the Director of Defence
Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, to speak on the issue as calls
to his mobile telephone did not connect.
Also, Olukolade did not respond to a text message sent to him.

When contacted, the Director, Communications Division, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ogbole Ahmedu-Ode, said, “I am in transit right
now and I am hearing about this from you for the first time, I can’t
comment on it. You may ask the Defence Headquarters.’’

Are you Nigerians for or against the recent BokoHaram ceasefire?

Let's discuss folks. I've been reading a lot of comments and articles on
this matter and it looks like opinions are divided. The Nigerian military
yesterday announced a ceasefire with Boko Haram after years of
terrorism from the group, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands
of innocent Nigerians. The ceasefire agreement includes the release of
over 200 Chibok girls - which to me is a very welcome development.
There are reports that some of these girls will be released to the man
who brokered the peace deal, Chadian president, Idriss Deby, sometime
next week, to show they (Boko Haram) are serious about the ceasefire
agreement with the Nigerian government.

But there are those who still think that the government shouldn't have
negotiated with these terrorists. After the cut, you will find an article
from Dr Perry Brimah of Ends.ng, about why Nigerians should reject
these ceasefire deal. As for me, I support peace anytime.

Too many
innocent people have died unnecessary. But read and tell us if you
agree with him...
Nigerians Reject Ceasefire With Boko Haram Terrorists; Use The $1bn
For War, not #Election2015: #VictoryForNigeria
The people of Nigeria vehemently reject the announced ceasefire with
Boko Haram terrorists at this last hour as the 2015 presidential election
approaches. It defies reason how and why the Nigerian government will
debase the collective intelligence and humanity and extinguish the
hope of Nigerians by unilaterally agreeing to a so-called ceasefire with
rag-tag terrorists who currently occupy several major cities in the
north. Bama, Gwoza, Marte, Ngala, Konduga and Dikwa are still under
full control of the Boko Haram terrorists.
The discussions on freeing the 4 month old abducted girls no longer
has any bearing on the process of this war. When entire communities
are under Boko Haram governorship, of what significance is the 234
girls? The 234 girls only comes up for global audiences who have not
noticed that since the abduction, several Nigerian communities have
rather fallen under Boko Haram. The Nigerian leadership must be
reminded that the parents of the Chibok girls have already conducted
the burial rights of their children and sacrificed them for the greater
good of the country as God wishes. Who is fooling who?
The desire to have a ceasefire with these hopeless, murderous terrorists
who are on the run is treacherous and follows the routine of disgraced
ex-general Ihejirika who likewise allowed periods of peace after
onslaught on the terrorists to allow them recover and recuperate; while
in his hatred for the communities in Nigeria’s north, deliberately
allowing he terrorists periods to replenish their arms and ammunitions
and to forcibly recruit and train thousands of abducted and forcefully
conscripted innocent northern children who will again be sacrificed and
killed in the next battle with the Nigerian military when war resumes.
This fight and cease cycle maintained the genocide of northern youth in
the tens of thousands.
Nigerians demand fire for fire. We reject any attempt at ceasefire with
the terrorists. We decree that the war with Boko Haram continues every
day as we declare Boko Haram our mortal, eternal enemies to fight till
either of us cease to exist.
What does President Jonathan plan to do with the $1 billion he
borrowed to “fight Boko Haram” if he is negotiating with them now that
we see #VictoryForNigeria in the horizon, and all we need is to continue
the brave push by our men in uniform and brave Civilian-JTF? Is the $1
billion for the elections in 2015 as most have suggested?
Any negotiation short of full and unconditional surrender of all terrorists
is treason and an act of terror participation and sponsorship by the
army Chiefs and head of State.
There can be no ceasefire with Boko Haram.
We the Nigerian people reject any sort of negotiation with these
terrorists who have freely caused us unquantifiable pain without mercy
for the full 6 years of the Jonathan administration under Ihejirika and
now under Maj. General Minimah.

Nigerian Govt reaches ceasefire agreement withBoko Haram

According to a breaking news report on Channels TV, the Nigerian
government has reached a ceasefire agreement with Boko Hraram
following today's meeting between government officials led by
President Jonathan's principal private secretary, Amb. Tukur, Chadian
government and reps of the sect group led by Danaldi Ahmadu.

To this end, the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, has directed all
service chiefs to comply with the ceasefire agreement between Nigeria
and Boko Haram in all areas of operations. Securing the release of the
219 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram was a major part of their
discussions. More later...

Pic: Nigerian man jumps to his death trying toescape from police in Malaysia

The Nigerian man pictured named Osazuwa allegedly jumped to
his death from a 15-storey building on Monday October 13th as police
stormed a place he was staying with friends in Malaysia.

According to local media report, a Nigerian student had lodged a police
report in Puchong on Sunday October 12th claiming his girlfriend had
been kidnapped by Osazuwa and his gang.
"The boyfriend said he received a call from a suspect who
demanded RM40,000 for the release of his girlfriend, also a
Nigerian student here.

We suspected the kidnappers were people
that the victim must have known. Police immediately tracked the
victim and her kidnappers’ whereabouts.” criminal investigator
Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah said.

Malaysia police said the victim’s boyfriend cooperated with the police in
their investigations and he managed to coax the suspects into giving
him more time and told them he was gathering the funds.
The police managed to find the victim’s location on Monday. She was
being held in a condominium unit in Taman Melati, Ampang.

“We formed a team to raid the condominium unit and moved in on
the suspects at about 5pm.”
Mohd Adnan said when police ambushed the unit located at the
condominium’s 13th floor, there were three Nigerian men and two local
women.

The victim was being held in one of the rooms.
“Upon seeing the police, the suspects attempted to escape. The
raiding team arrested two women and two men,” he said.
The other suspect tried to climb down from the balcony to a unit below.

However, he could not grab hold of anything and fell to his death.
“The suspect who died was in his 20s and we are still trying to
establish his identity,” Mohd Adnan said.
The victim was unharmed while in the custody of the suspects. He said
investigation are underway to determine how many other kidnapping
cases they were involved in.

“The gang thought they could get money quickly by carrying out
this crime, but look what had happened — it has just gone awfully
wrong,” he said.

Nigerians plead for foreign help as Ebola fears spread

Lagos: Standing just a few hundred metres from the Lagos hospital where a Liberian man died of Ebola, John Ejiofor pleaded for the world to help contain a spread of the virus raging across west Africa.

"Nigeria is in a serious mess," the 40-year-old electrical engineer told AFP. "We lack the capacity to deal with the situation."

Residents of Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa's largest city with more than 20 million people, returned to work today after a four-day break to mark the end of Islam's holy month of Ramadan, a public holiday across the country, even in the majority Christian south.

It was the first workday morning in the bustling mega-city since authorities confirmed that the worst-ever Ebola epidemic -- which has killed more than 670 people since March in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone -- had reached Nigerian soil.

Patrick Sawyer, an employee of the Liberian finance ministry, is thought to have contracted the virus from his sister before travelling to Nigeria for a regional conference.

The 40-year-old died in quarantine Friday at a hospital next to the Obalende market, where Ejiofor sat in his car on today, voicing concern over Nigeria's response to the outbreak.

"If there is an Ebola epidemic in Nigeria today, our health authorities will be too overwhelmed... The government has to work with the World Health Organisation (WHO)," to stop the virus from spreading, he said.

Elizabeth Akinlabi, a 30-year-old schoolteacher milling around Obalende, agreed, saying that days after the Ebola death was confirmed, the government's response remained lacklustre.

"A lot of people still do not know about the existence of the disease, not to talk of taking measures to prevent it," she said, asking the WHO "to come to the aid of Nigeria".

Eight killed in Yobe terror attack

Abuja - Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly killed eight people in Katarko village in the outskirts of Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
The terrorists allegedly blew off an important bridge during the siege.

Katarko, which is 22 kilometres south of Damaturu the Yobe state capital, is a community in Gujba Local Government Area of the state and believed to be one of the strongholds of the sect in the Northeastern state.

Residents revealed to journalists that the insurgents stormed the town last evening, first attacking the military base before moving to some houses where they killed the civilians.

One of the residents who claimed that the siege was on for over seven hours, told journalists on Tuesday morning that, “they (suspects) came here and launched an unsuccessful attack on the military base before embarking on some selective killings within town living us with eight casualties presently being prepared for burial."
He said the insurgents stormed the town without any form of resistance.

It was also gathered that during the siege the insurgents blew off the Katarko Bridge linking Damaturu to their stronghold-Buni Yadi, the capital of Gujba Local Government Area of the state. This area connects Yobe and neighbouring Borno and Adamawa states, all under emergency rule as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency.
