Client Offered Us N300,000 To Kill London Returnee – Suspected Assassins
“The client had not told us who the victim was. What he initially told us was that there was an election operation which we would carry out for a politician. He asked me to get more people to handle it. So, I got the other gang members.
“We planned everything with the client, who we simply refer to as chairman, at a beer parlour on Awawu Street, Mushin. Later on, when we were arrested, we got to know that one of those people we were dealing with was actually a detective.
“It was not that I worked as an assassin. I stay on Mustapha Street, Mushin, with my family where I work as generator repairer. I am also a cult member. I was initiated into the Aiye cult last year October. It was the money that enticed us. The chairman promised to give us N300,000 for the job.”
“I stay in Mushin. I deal in drugs. It was Taiwo who said he had a group which wanted to carry out a lucrative operation, and I should be a part of it. I told them that I don’t indulge in armed robbery, but they promised me a huge part of the money.
“On the day we were arrested, we were about collecting the N300,000 payment. Taiwo and I went to a hotel lounge in Mushin, and that was where the police arrested us. I have never killed before. This is my first time. We intended to spend the money for Christmas.”
He said, “The suspects have confessed to the crime. Investigation continues on the matter.”

Asa opens up about her love life, says she's in love & very happy
Singer Asa was a guest on BeatFM 99.9 Midday
Show with Toolz today to talk about her new
album, Bed of Stone, where she opened up about
her love life. The 32 year old told Toolz that
she's finally found love and is in a very happy
relationship. She also revealed that the new love
of her life inspired her hit single, ‘How did love
find me?'. Asked if the lucky guy is Nigerian, Asa
said no.
Majority of foreign prisoners in Ghana are Nigerians & its a national disgrace- Nigeria ambassador to Ghana
Nigeria's High Commissioner to Ghana,
Ambassador Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan has
raised an alarm over the increasing number of
Nigerians serving jail terms in Ghana, describing
the increasing number of Nigerians in foreign
prison all over the world as a National disgrace.
"Firstly, I agree with you that majority of
them are Nigerians, but should majority of
them be Nigerians? We shouldn’t even be
saying such things with pride because it is
a national disgrace. Every country we go,
they are filled with Nigerians, why? It is
unfortunate. But I believe if you are ready
to take the risk, then you must be ready to
dance to the music. Now to the question of
helping with infrastructure and other things;
Nigeria High Commission doesn’t have the
kind of money to build prisons. We are just
here to do our core duties such as issuing
passports, visa, supporting Nigerians in
distress and to keep promoting the
diplomatic relationship between the two
brotherly nations" Ambassador Onafowokan
told Tribune
Ambassador Onafowokan says his personal
efforts has helped in saving a Nigerian who was
once put on death roll and that no Nigerian has
died in any of the Ghanian prisons since he
assumed office
"As regard the issue of the report, I want to
believe it was written by one of the
prisoners and smuggled to someone to
publish for them, because the report is not
the reality on ground. First of all, I will like
to assure you that no Nigerian has died in
the prison. Secondly, I want to assure you
that I visited them; spoke to them and I
always sympathise with them. But the truth
is, when you do illegal things in a foreign
land, you should know you will be jailed in
that foreign land, so why commit such a
crime? Moreover, if they succeeded in
making money from such illicit transaction,
they use the money to harass everyone on
the streets; illicit money source of which
you will never know. I have visited them
and I make sure people visit them regularly.
I usually send my officials to take toiletries
and other provisions to them. If you check
on them, they are almost more than the
Ghanaians in Nsawam prison in terms of
population. They wouldn’t stop doing drugs
and getting involved in armed robbery
cases. I remember a Nigerian was
sentenced to death, I personally spoke to
the Chief Justice and I wrote a letter to
plead for his life, and he has not been
executed, and I don’t think he’ll be
executed. About the long sentences they
are giving them, which I was told by the
Chief Justice of Ghana Mrs Theodore
Woods, they assured me that they will look
into it, but they told me those sentences
are to discourage other Nigerians from
thinking Ghana is a safe haven for
criminals. It is logical to make a U-turn if
you know that you are likely to get a prison
sentence of 50-130 years if caught
committing crime as a Nigerian or a
foreigner. But that has not deter them, as
Nigerians fill up the Ghana prisons on a
daily basis, and after being caught, they
want us (Nigeria High Commission) to
come and get them out. Also, any Nigerian
prisoner released comeS to the Nigeria High
Commission (NHC), we usually give them
GHC100 ($40) which will take them to
Lagos. Since I resumed as the High
Commissioner, I have been doing that
religiously. Sometimes when they come, I
will ask them to be brought in front of me,
and I ask them what led them into it, and
afterwards, I counsel them. The question
remains that when you know there is a
reward for your crime if caught, why do it?
On the question of prisoners exchange, I
have spoken with the parliamentary
Committee on Foreign Affairs and I
mentioned the issue; I was made to
understand that Nigerian prisons are too
full, and that the prisoner exchange
document has not been concluded yet. If
you check countries around the world, you
will find Nigerian prisoners there, and it
baffles me. I think we need a national
orientation because this is becoming a huge
embarrassment to the Federal Republic of
Nigeria, and this is as a result of the fact
that they want to get rich quick. It’s not a
crime to be rich, but it must be earned. The
High Commission is doing its best to
ensure that Nigerian prisoners have a
humanity touch. The High Commission
doesn’t have power to get them released;
all we can do is to keep pleading"he said.
Ambassador Onafowokan stated that it was
wrong for the Ghanian authorities to hand
long jail term to foreigners as an instrument
of deterrent but that as an Ambassador, he
has no power to change the judicial system
of a country. He argues that to serve long
jail term is better than beheading which is
the law in some other countries for drug
traffickers. "I agree that policy is not right.
Like I told you, I sat down with Chief
Justice Theodore Woods, and he promised
to work on it. I don’t think I can force
authorities in Ghana to change its justice
system. So also, Ghana High Commission
in Nigeria cannot force Nigerian government
to change our justice system. In some
countries, the law prescribed that you will
be beheaded if you commit certain crime,
and there’s little or nothing diplomacy can
do to make them change their mind. I think
to go to prison for a long time is better
than being beheaded. But the best solution
is to walk away from criminality" he said.

Okada rider rapes 14-year-old tuberculosis patient in Lagos
A 35-year-old man, Andrew Ekanem, has been arrested by the police
for allegedly raping his neighbour’s daughter in the Bariga area of
Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the 14-year-old victim was still undergoing a
six-month treatment for tuberculosis when she was attacked by the
suspect on Monday morning.
Our correspondent was told that the victim was the first of four
children.
The mother of the victim, Mrs. Adenike Aderinkomi, a trader, told our
correspondent at their house on Akilo Street that her daughter went
to ease herself in the early hours of the morning when she was
cornered by the Cross River State indigene.
She claimed the suspect penetrated her daughter through the anus and
vagina.
She said, “It was around 2am on Monday when my daughter woke up
and said she wanted to go and ease herself.
“I was having my quiet time and didn’t know when I slept off. I woke
up about 15 minutes later and didn’t see her in the room.
“I woke her father up and he said he didn’t know her whereabouts. We
both became anxious and went outside to search for her.
“Another neighbour also joined us in the search.”
She said she was shouting her daughter’s name in the backyard, but did
not get any response.
Aderinkomi said about 10 minutes later, her husband saw their
daughter coming out of Ekanem’s room.
Our correspondent learnt people overwhelmed her with a barrage of
questions, but the Primary six pupil insisted she went to ease herself.
Her mother said she pulled her away from the growing crowd of
neighbours and pressed her to talk.
“My daughter became afraid. She then told me that while she was on
her way to ease herself, Ekanem grabbed her and took her inside his
room to sleep with her. She said while I was shouting her name, he
covered her mouth.
“People seized him and wanted to beat him up. But I had to quickly
report the matter to the police very early in the morning so people
would not take the law into their hands,” she said.
Aderinkomi said she was surprised because when her daughter fell
critically ill in February, last year, Ekanem assisted her family in
taking her to Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for traditional
treatment.
PUNCH Metro learnt that after the alleged rape, the victim was taken
to the Gbagada General Hospital for testing and treatment.
A medical report, which was sighted by our correspondent, revealed
that the victim sustained bruises in her private parts.
The paper, signed by one Dr. Ojekunle of the hospital, stated, “The child
was caught with a neighbour around 2am today. She confessed that the
neighbour called her on her way to ease herself and forced her and had
sex with her.
“She sustained bruises in her anus and vagina (as a result of) sexual
assault.”
Our correspondent was told that the victim had been taken to an
undisclosed orthodox church for “prayers and deliverance”.
A carpenter, Tunde Hassan, who lives in the house where the incident
happened, expressed surprise, saying nobody imagined Ekanem could do
such a thing.
Hassan said, “Up till now, I cannot comprehend what happened. The man
was a gentle man and he never fought or made trouble with anybody.
“But at the same time, people should learn to forgive when things like
this happen, because you never can tell. Somebody that was bad to you
today can be good to you tomorrow.”
It was learnt that the suspect was arrested by policemen from the
Bariga Police Division.
A police source told our correspondent that investigation revealed the
suspect was fond of the act and usually induced his victims with money.
He said, “That was not his first time of doing such a thing. This
particular girl, he had slept with her about three times. He was always
giving her money ranging from N200 to N500.
“But this time, he was caught red-handed and that was why the girl’s
parents are insisting on taking him to court. When he was queried, he
didn’t give any reason for his behaviour. He’s just fond of sleeping
with little girls.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth
Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been taken
to court.

Fashola Dares FG, Lagos Schools Will Not Resume Sept 22
Fashola made the disclosure when he received the Country Representative of the World Health Organization, Mr. Rui Van Gaz who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
“The state government is in the process of ascertaining through scientific risk evaluation, whether it will accept the date announced by the Federal Government,” he said.
He added that if evaluation showed that children would be at risk on resumption, Lagos schools would not open on September 22.
He further urged the state government to avoid being complacent due to the apparent drop in the number of Ebola cases, saying the war had not been won until the virus was entirely wiped out.
“On schools resumption, we need to ensure that the schools are fully prepared in terms of availability of water, soaps and sanitizers,” said the envoy.
“The teachers must be fully aware of what needed to be done when they are faced with any suspected case of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD in their school. The students must be enlightened about the symptoms of the deadly disease. Even though the number of Ebola cases has reduced and most of the contacts are out of the 21-day quarantine, we should avoid any complacency.
“Until the last case is over and surveillance completed, we should not relent in the effort at tackling the disease. We need to learn from this experience by not only dealing with the disease but to strengthen the entire health system in the country.” He said.

Lagos Ebola death: Government places 38 health workers, 21 others on surveillance
The Lagos State Government says it has stepped up measures aimed at stopping the spread of Ebola virus in Nigeria.
To this effect, the government said at least 59 people that had contact with the late Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian citizen that died of Ebola virus Lagos last week, have been placed on close surveillance.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health Dr. Jide Idris, disclosed this on Monday at a press briefing.
Idris, who addressed journalists in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Health officials at the Staff Clinic in Alausa, said the measure was geared towards preventing the spread of the virus, assured residents that there was no cause for alarm.
“So far a total of 59 contacts have been registered consisting 44 hospital contacts, 38 healthcare workers and six laboratory staff. Others are 15 airport contacts comprising three Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) staff-driver, Liaison, and Protocol officer, Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, two nursing staff and five airport passenger handlers.
“As of the time of this report, 20 contacts had been physically screened of which 50 percent type one contact and 50 percent had type two contacts”, he disclosed.
The commissioner lamented that the manifest of the Asky Airline Flight No KP50 that brought the victim into the country has not been provided by the airline at the time of this report, saying the precise number of passenger contacts is yet to be ascertained.
He pointed out that two flights were involved (Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos), noting that there was no report of medical incident filled.

[News] Lagos bans use of sirens
Lagos - The Lagos State Government has banned the indiscriminate and unlawful use of sirens in the area.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye, announced the ban in a notice issued to remind the general public, especially drivers and other road users in the state, on the use of siren.
Ipaye said that the use of siren and other noisy devises in vehicles are prohibited under the Lagos State Road Traffic Law.
He noted that the only exception allowed by the law is in respect of vehicles in use for emergency purposes, such as ambulances, fire engines and law enforcement vehicles on urgent call.
Ipaye added that apart from those listed, nobody is allowed to use siren or other noisy devise in a vehicle within the territorial boundary of the state, as this is criminal
"The use of sirens and other noisy devices have caused unnecessary harassment to innocent road users and resulted in many instances of traffic congestion, avoidable motor accidents, damage to property and personal injury’.
Ipaye therefore called on road users in the State to note that under section 24(c) of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2011, it is a criminal offence to use or deploy siren or other noisy device in a vehicle within the State.
"By virtue of section 36(1) of the same Law, convicted offenders may be fined up to N30 000 and/or imprisoned for up to three years."
Ipaye noted that in addition to the above penalty, offenders would be held fully responsible for damages or injury caused by this contravention, and the offending vehicle is also liable to be forfeited to the State by virtue of Section 36(2) of the Law.
"Law Enforcement Officers have been directed to ensure full compliance with the Lagos State Road Traffic Law for the purpose of ensuring peace, safety, and security of all residents and visitors on our roads," Ipaye added.

NAFDAC seals 400 illegal pharmaceutical outfits in Lagos, Kano
LAGOS—National Agency for Food and Drug
Administration and Control, NAFDAC, weekend shut
over 400 pharmaceutical stores over sale and distribution
of substandard, spurious, falsely labeled, falsified
counterfeit medical products, SSFFC in Lagos and Kano
states.
Disclosing this in Lagos, the Director-General of
NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, also said fake products valued at
N700 million were seized by the Federal Task Force
consisting of NAFDAC, and other stakeholders such as
the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, PCN, Nigeria Police
Force, NPC and Nigeria Customs Service among others.
Among the areas raided by the taskforce included
Idumota and Mushin in Lagos, as well as Sabon-Gari drug
market in Kano State.
Orhii noted that the operation to seal the stores and
confiscate products was code-named, ‘Operation
Porcupine’, a follow-up to ‘Operation Mamba’ in East
Africa in 2008 and ‘Operation Cobra’ which took place in
seven West African countries in 2011.
He explained that the medicines discovered included
counterfeit and expired products such as antibiotics,
aphrodisiacs with pornographic pictorials, anti-malarials,
multivitamins, endocrinals like misoprostol, expired
oxytocin injection and controlled products like Tramadol
and Diazepam.
Orhii said banned products such as Analgin injection,
condoms with unapproved pictorials and improperly
stored vaccines like Tetanus Toxoid were among the
products.
”The Tramadol Hydrochloride capsules discovered
contained 200mg as opposed to approved dosage form of
50mg,” he said.
Orhii said the crackdown was aimed at combating
pharmaceutical crime including smuggling and sale of
substandard counterfeit medicines at Sabon-Gari drug
market, Kano where SSFFC medical products were seized
and evacuated on June 24.

Lagos explosion caused by fuel-laden tanker, not bomb - Police
Force Public Relations officer, Ngozi Braide explains
“There is nothing whatsoever suggesting that it was a bomb explosion. It was a tanker loaded with fuel that burst into flames. Policemen are on ground there
now and we cannot yet ascertain the casualty figures. But everything is under control,” she said.
In a contradictory statement, Ibrahim Farinloye, the Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA South-West said the cause of the fire was as a result of a gas cylinder explosion. See more photos from the incident after the cut...
"People were reported to be filling gas into the cylinder before it exploded. The incident happened within Folawiyo Energy Premises but they did not allow fire men into their premises at all” Mr. Farinloye said in a text message to Premiumtimes.
